How do I share files online?

For most people file sharing means emailing a single file from your PC to friends, family, or colleagues. While this is fine for sharing a few docs or photos, it does not work for sharing very large files or many files at once.

When you use an online file sharing service you are able to share large files or many files at once with multiple people.  For example, if you’d like to share your wedding album photos, you can upload these photos to an online location through a sharing service, so that all of your friends and family are able to view them.  Using an online file sharing service also enables group collaboration on the same document.

There are a number of services that allow you to share documents online for free.  Here are a few recommended ones:

Dropbox – Once you set up Dropbox, files can be shared between multiple people using shared folders.  Groups use a shared Dropbox folder to share, view, add, remove, and edit files. Dropbox will automatically synchronize files for everyone, so everyone’s folder will have the same stuff.

Google Docs – Google Docs allows you to easily share documents with other Gmail users, and makes collaborating in the workplace easily.  Upload documents, and invite colleagues and friends to view, edit, and make changes to a document.  Google Docs is a free service and syncs with Google Drive.

Box.net – Box allows you to store files in multiple folders in the cloud.  Using this software you can easily share files with others by sending them a link to a folder in your cloud.  These links can be password protected.  This enables quick and easy document collaboration.  Starting a personal account is free, but there is a fee to subscribe to a business or enterprise account.
