How do I backup my important files online?

Online backup is critical and necessary to protect all of your most precious documents, files, photos, and videos.  Cloud backup, which provides an online storage space for your files, is a very safe method to back up the most important files from your PC without the use of hardware.  This online storage space, which is known as the cloud, gives you the security of knowing your files are saved to a location outside of your computer.  It also allows you to access your files from anywhere.  Whether you experience a hardware failure, your PC dies, or you get to the office to discover you left your laptop at home, your important files will be saved online to the cloud ready for you to access – anytime, anywhere.

Services you can use to backup your files are:

  • Dropbox – Once installed on your PC, this popular online storage service lets you save your files to the cloud.  After installing Dropbox you will see a folder called “Dropbox” on your desktop where you can put all of your most important files, photos, or videos.  Any files you put in this folder will automatically be backed up to the cloud.  All Dropbox accounts come with 2 GB of free space that you can use to store documents, photos, videos, or any other files of importance.
  • Microsoft SkyDrive – Microsoft’s storage program gives you 7 GB of free online storage to back up your most important files and access them anywhere, at any time, even if your computer crashes.  Once SkyDrive is installed on your PC, the program’s fetch function allows you to access all of the files from your PC from any computer in the world.
  • Google Drive – The newest tool in the Google ecosystem.  This program gives you 5 GB of free storage space and access to your files anywhere in the world.  You can also create new documents while working in Google Drive, and they will automatically be backed up to your Google Drive cloud.  Google Drive automatically syncs with Google Docs.
  • Crashplan – Crashplan allows you to backup to multiple computers for free.  Crashplan uses social backup software that enables you to back up to the computers of your friends and family.  While backing up to other PCs is free, backup to a cloud requires a premium account.
